Brain energy metabolism refers to the complex network of biochemical processes that supply and regulate the energy required for brain function. The brain relies almost entirely on a continuous supply of oxygen and glucose from the blood for its immediate energy needs. Neurons consume approximately 75–80% of all energy produced in the brain. Astrocytes also play a crucial role by producing lactate through glycolysis and glycogen metabolism, which can be shuttled to neurons as an alternative fuel source. This metabolism is tightly regulated both spatially and temporally, and disruption is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline.
