Overview

Brain expressed X-linked protein 5 (BEX5) belongs to the BEX gene family, which localizes to the X chromosome and is highly expressed in neural tissues. BEX proteins are intrinsically disordered, serve as signaling mediators, and participate in neuronal development and differentiation, as well as in cell proliferation and apoptosis. Altered expression of BEX family members is associated with various cancers (e.g., glioblastoma, leukemia, breast cancer) and neurodevelopmental processes, suggesting their involvement in disease pathogenesis. BEX5 itself is one of the lesser-studied members, with most functional and disease data derived from studies of BEX1, BEX2, and BEX3, but it is considered part of this broader protein family likely involved in similar biological pathways[1][2][3][4][5][6].
