Overview

Brain oscillation synchronization refers to the coordinated timing of rhythmic electrical activity—known as neural oscillations—across populations of neurons within the central nervous system. These synchronized patterns are fundamental for efficient communication between different brain regions and underlie many cognitive functions including attention, memory formation, perception, motor control, and consciousness. Synchronization can occur locally within small neuronal ensembles or globally across distant areas via mechanisms such as cross-frequency coupling. Abnormalities in neural synchrony have been implicated in various neurological and psychiatric conditions including epilepsy, schizophrenia, ADHD, Alzheimer's disease and other neurocognitive disorders. While modulation of neural synchrony is being explored therapeutically using techniques like neurostimulation or neurofeedback for certain diseases,[6] "brain oscillation synchronization" itself is not a discrete molecular target but rather an emergent property arising from complex interactions among neurons.[1][2][4][5]
