Brain Wave Patterns

01

Overview

Brain wave patterns are not a single molecule or receptor but rather the rhythmic electrical impulses generated by the synchronized activity of large groups of neurons in the brain. These patterns are measured using electroencephalography (EEG), which records voltage fluctuations from electrodes placed on the scalp. The main types of brain wave frequencies—delta (deep sleep), theta (relaxation/meditation), alpha (calm wakefulness), beta (active thinking/focus), and gamma (high-level cognition)—correspond to different mental states. While these patterns provide valuable information about overall brain function and are used clinically to diagnose conditions like epilepsy or monitor anesthesia depth, they do not represent a discrete molecular target suitable for drug development or direct pharmacological intervention. Instead, they serve as physiological readouts reflecting underlying neural processes.
