Breast Mucin

Molecular classification
Glycoprotein, Transmembrane mucin, Secreted mucin, Cell surface antigen

Overview

Breast mucin refers to a group of high molecular weight glycoproteins, either secreted or membrane-bound, that are significantly involved in breast tissue biology and pathology, particularly in breast cancer. Mucins, especially transmembrane types like MUC1, play key roles in tissue protection and lubrication, and in pathological processes like carcinogenesis. Their altered expression and glycosylation make them important biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis and promising targets for novel therapies in breast cancer management. Specific mucins such as MUC1 are explored as targets for immunotherapy approaches, including vaccines and antibody-based therapies, due to their surface expression on tumor cells and role in immune evasion.
