Overview

Breast tissue is a complex anatomical structure primarily composed of milk-producing mammary glands, adipose tissue, and connective tissue (StatPearls, 2023). Its main physiological role is lactation, which is regulated by a variety of hormones including prolactin, estrogen, and progesterone (NIH, 2024). In the context of pharmacology and drug discovery, breast tissue is not considered a valid molecular target; rather, it is the anatomical site where specific molecular targets, such as the Estrogen Receptor (ER) or Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2), are expressed (National Cancer Institute, 2024). Because it encompasses a wide variety of cell types and molecular pathways, it is considered too broad and anatomically defined to serve as a discrete therapeutic target. Therapeutic strategies are instead directed at specific proteins, enzymes, or genetic mutations within the tissue to treat conditions like breast cancer or mastitis. Consequently, while drugs may be administered to affect the tissue, their mechanism of action is defined by their interaction with specific molecular components rather than the tissue as a whole.
