Broad cancer cell populations refers to the diverse and heterogeneous collection of malignant cells found across various cancer types and stages, rather than a specific molecular target such as a receptor, enzyme, or protein. In clinical oncology, this term is typically used to describe the intended scope of broad-spectrum therapies, including traditional cytotoxic chemotherapies or emerging pan-cancer targeted agents, which aim to eliminate malignant cells regardless of their specific tissue of origin (National Cancer Institute, 2023). Because cancer is characterized by significant intra-tumor and inter-tumor heterogeneity, these populations consist of multiple clones with distinct genetic and phenotypic profiles, making them a complex biological system rather than a single druggable entity (Nature Reviews Cancer, 2012). Targeting such broad populations presents substantial therapeutic challenges, most notably the emergence of resistant sub-clones and the difficulty of achieving selectivity over healthy somatic cells. Consequently, modern precision medicine often seeks to move away from treating broad populations in favor of identifying and targeting specific molecular drivers within those populations to improve efficacy and reduce toxicity.
