Because these components are fundamental to all living cells, drugs targeting them often exhibit a broad spectrum of activity but are frequently associated with significant off-target toxicity and a narrow therapeutic window (NCBI Bookshelf, 2022). Consequently, this term is often used in drug databases to categorize compounds with diffuse or poorly defined molecular mechanisms.
