Overview

Inactivated Escherichia coli (E. coli) components are used as broad immunostimulants to modulate the host's innate immune system, particularly within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. These preparations typically contain bacterial cell wall fragments, lipopolysaccharides (LPS), flagellin, and other pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). When administered, these components interact with pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs), on epithelial and immune cells. This interaction triggers several downstream effects: activation of pro-inflammatory signaling pathways like NF-κB; induction of cytokine and chemokine secretion; recruitment of neutrophils and other immune cells to sites of infection or dysbiosis; and enhancement of mucosal barrier integrity. By restoring proper immune surveillance and promoting a balanced inflammatory response, these E. coli-derived products can help clear pathogenic bacteria from the gut while supporting recolonization by beneficial microbiota—thereby addressing dysbiosis.
