The broad oral microbial community, commonly known as the oral microbiome, is a complex ecological system comprising over 700 species of bacteria, as well as fungi, viruses, and archaea (Dewhirst et al., 2010, Journal of Bacteriology). It plays a vital role in human health by maintaining oral homeostasis, aiding in the initial stages of digestion, and preventing the colonization of pathogenic microorganisms through niche competition (Kilian et al., 2016, British Dental Journal). Dysbiosis within this community—a shift from a symbiotic to a pathogenic state—is the primary cause of prevalent oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontitis (Marsh, 2003, Journal of Clinical Periodontology). Emerging research also links the oral microbiome to systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease, often mediated by the systemic spread of oral pathogens or inflammatory mediators (Hajishengallis, 2015, Nature Reviews Immunology). Therapeutic interventions targeting this community include broad-spectrum antimicrobials like chlorhexidine, which disrupt biofilms, and targeted antibiotics like metronidazole, as well as emerging probiotic strategies designed to restore microbial balance (Slots, 2017, Periodontology 2000).
Therapeutic agents interact with the oral microbial community by disrupting cell wall synthesis, inhibiting protein production, or physically removing biofilms to reduce the load of pathogenic species and promote a health-associated microbial balance.
