Bromodomain extra-terminal domain proteins (BETs) are a family of epigenetic "reader" proteins that play a central role in the regulation of gene transcription. They are characterized by the presence of two tandem N-terminal bromodomains (BD1 and BD2) and a conserved extra-terminal (ET) domain. In mammals, the BET family includes BRD2, BRD3, BRD4, and BRDT. They bind to acetylated lysine residues on histones and recruit factors for chromatin remodeling and transcriptional activation. BET proteins have been implicated in oncogenesis and viral infection, making them therapeutic targets for cancer treatment and antiviral strategies.
