The bronchial and pharyngeal mucosa is the specialized mucous membrane lining the respiratory tract from the throat to the bronchi. This tissue is a primary site of inflammation in conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pharyngitis, where it undergoes structural changes like goblet cell hyperplasia and basement membrane thickening (NIH, 2022). While many therapeutic agents, including inhaled corticosteroids and local anesthetics, are administered directly to these surfaces, the mucosa itself is an anatomical structure containing multiple distinct molecular targets rather than a single protein or receptor (PubMed, 2021). Consequently, it is classified as a tissue-level site of action rather than a specific molecular therapeutic target. The health of this mucosa is vital for respiratory function, as it facilitates the warming, humidification, and filtration of inhaled air.
