Overview

Bronchial epithelial cells form the inner lining of the bronchial tree and comprise several subtypes including ciliated, basal, goblet/secretory, and undifferentiated cells[3][5]. They serve as structural barriers protecting the airway from inhaled pathogens and particulates, facilitate mucociliary clearance via coordinated cilia movement and mucus secretion, and participate actively in immune responses through secretion of cytokines and chemokines[1][3][5][8]. Their dysfunction is central to pathogenesis of multiple respiratory diseases, such as asthma and COPD, where they contribute to chronic inflammation, airway remodeling, and abnormal repair mechanisms. While not molecular drug targets themselves, understanding and modulating their function is key to disease management and development of novel therapeutic strategies[2][3][5][8][10].
