Brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis is a biological process where brown fat generates heat to maintain body temperature. This process, mediated primarily by UCP1, involves uncoupled mitochondrial respiration, leading to energy dissipation as heat. BAT thermogenesis plays a role in energy expenditure, glucose and lipid metabolism, and may influence systemic metabolism through the secretion of batokines. Strategies aimed at activating or increasing functional brown/beige fat are being explored as potential therapies for obesity and metabolic diseases.
