BTG4P1 is annotated as a pseudogene homolog of the BTG anti-proliferation factor 4 gene (BTG4). Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but typically nonfunctional; they do not encode active proteins. Some pseudogenes, however, have been implicated in gene regulation by acting through non-coding RNA mechanisms, such as miRNA decoys or competitive endogenous RNAs. The BTG family proteins (including BTG4) are antiproliferative factors involved in cell cycle regulation and tumor suppression, but their pseudogenes do not have direct roles in protein function or as classical drug targets. The evidence for direct functional roles of most pseudogenes, including BTG4P1, is limited and often context-dependent. It is not a therapeutic target and does not function as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other protein suitable for drug targeting.
