BTG3 antisense RNA 1 (BTG3-AS1, also known as ASBEL) is a long non-coding antisense RNA transcribed from the DNA strand opposite the ANA/BTG3 gene. ASBEL forms RNA duplexes with ANA/BTG3 mRNA in the nucleus and suppresses its export to the cytoplasm, thereby reducing ANA/BTG3 protein expression without affecting ANA/BTG3 mRNA levels. This post-transcriptional regulation promotes cell proliferation and tumorigenesis, particularly in ovarian clear cell carcinoma and colon cancer. In colon cancer, ASBEL functions as part of a molecular complex with transcription factor TCF3 to repress activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3), mediating tumorigenic effects downstream of Wnt/β-catenin signaling. There are currently no known drugs targeting BTG3-AS1, but its role in cancer biology suggests it may have future value as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker.
