Bulk cellular proteins and cell membranes in lesion tissue

Overview

Bulk cellular proteins and cell membranes in lesion tissue represent a non-specific therapeutic target for physical or chemical ablative therapies. Rather than binding to a specific receptor, drugs or modalities targeting these components cause widespread denaturation of proteins and disruption of the lipid bilayer (NCBI, 2022). This leads to a loss of cellular integrity and subsequent necrosis of the pathological tissue (StatPearls, 2023). This approach is frequently used in the treatment of localized conditions such as viral warts, actinic keratosis, and certain solid tumors where physical removal of the tissue is desired (PubMed, 2021). Because the mechanism is non-selective, the therapeutic effect is typically restricted to the site of application to prevent damage to healthy surrounding structures (NIH, 2023). Common agents include caustic chemicals like trichloroacetic acid and physical methods like cryotherapy.
