Mechanism of action

Bulk-forming agents are indigestible hydrophilic colloids that absorb water in the intestine, swell to form a gel-like mass, and increase stool volume. This distends the colon wall and stimulates peristaltic activity by mechanical stretch. The increased bulk also supports bacterial growth in the colon which further contributes to fecal mass. The net result is enhanced gastrointestinal transit and easier passage of stool
