Bulk water in the intestinal lumen

Molecular classification
Inorganic molecule, Solvent

Overview

Bulk water in the intestinal lumen refers to the aqueous volume within the gastrointestinal tract that serves as the essential medium for digestion, nutrient absorption, and waste transport (StatPearls, 2023). While not a traditional protein-based receptor or enzyme, it acts as a physical therapeutic target for osmotic laxatives and bowel preparation agents (NIH, 2022). These drugs, such as polyethylene glycol or various magnesium and phosphate salts, increase the osmotic pressure within the lumen, preventing the reabsorption of water or drawing water from the surrounding tissues into the gut (PubMed, 2021). This process increases stool volume and softens its consistency, which stimulates mechanoreceptors in the intestinal wall to trigger peristalsis and facilitate defecation (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Proper regulation of luminal water is essential for maintaining normal bowel habits, and its manipulation is a primary strategy for treating constipation and clearing the bowel for diagnostic procedures (Wikipedia, 2024).

Mechanism of action

Osmotic retention or recruitment of water into the intestinal lumen to increase stool volume and decrease consistency, thereby stimulating peristalsis (StatPearls, 2023; PubMed, 2021).
