Overview

C-C chemokine receptor type 1 (CCR1) and type 5 (CCR5) are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family that serve as principal receptors for the chemokine macrophage inflammatory protein 1-alpha (MIP-1α/CCL3). Both receptors are expressed on a wide range of immune cells, including monocytes/macrophages, lymphocytes, dendritic cells, and hematopoietic progenitors, and mediate leukocyte recruitment and activation during inflammation, infection, and tissue injury. CCR5 is also a major co-receptor for HIV-1 cellular entry, making it a well-established therapeutic target in infectious disease and immunology. CCR1 and CCR5 antagonists are under development or are approved for certain indications. The non-standard term "Macrophage inflammatory protein 1-alpha receptor" usually refers to these two chemokine receptors.
