C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5), also known as CD195, is a seven-transmembrane G protein-coupled receptor primarily expressed on the surface of various immune cells, including T-lymphocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, eosinophils, and microglia. It plays a central role in regulating immune cell trafficking and effector functions during inflammatory responses. A critical function of CCR5 is serving as a major co-receptor for R5 strains of HIV‑1/2 entry into host cells. Beyond infectious disease it has implications in cancer, cardiovascular disease and more.
CCR5 antagonists block HIV entry by inhibiting interaction between virus envelope proteins and CCR5; inhibition of migration/metastasis in cancer.
