Overview

C-C motif chemokine ligand 13 (CCL13), also known as monocyte chemoattractant protein 4 (MCP-4), is a member of the CC chemokine family of secreted signaling proteins involved in the recruitment (chemotaxis) of immune cells, including monocytes, eosinophils, basophils, and lymphocytes, during inflammatory and immune responses[1][2][3]. CCL13 binds to chemokine receptors such as CCR1, CCR2, CCR3, CCR5, and CCR11 to mediate migration and activation of these cells and is expressed in various tissues and cell types[1][2]. CCL13 is implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma, allergic diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, and some malignancies, where it promotes inflammatory cell infiltration and tissue damage[1]. It can also exhibit antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria[1]. CCL13 levels serve as a disease biomarker in certain settings, and targeting the CCL13 axis is considered a potential strategy for modulating immune and inflammatory diseases, although its overlapping function with other chemokines poses significant therapeutic challenges[1][2].
