CCR5 mRNA is the transcript produced from the CCR5 gene located on chromosome 3, which encodes C-C motif chemokine receptor 5, a G protein-coupled receptor expressed on immune cells and involved in chemokine signaling, cell migration, and functioning as a co-receptor for HIV-1 entry. The abundance, stability, and translation efficiency of CCR5 mRNA regulate CCR5 protein expression and are controlled by several post-transcriptional mechanisms including ribosomal frameshifting, microRNA binding, and nonsense-mediated mRNA decay. While the transcript itself is rarely a therapeutic target, modulation of its level or stability can indirectly affect disease processes such as HIV infection or inflammation.
