Proto-oncogene protein c-myc mRNA (c-Myc)

Target
c-Myc
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Proto-oncogene
01

Overview

The proto-oncogene c-myc encodes a nuclear phosphoprotein, commonly referred to as c-Myc, which is a transcription factor with critical roles in cell cycle progression, apoptosis, cellular transformation, and metabolism. The *MYC* gene is located on human chromosome 8 and regulates the expression of approximately 15% of all genes by binding to enhancer box sequences (E-boxes) in DNA. Deregulation or overexpression leads to oncogenic transformation, frequently observed in many human cancers including lymphomas/leukemias. Constitutive activation disrupts normal control over proliferation/apoptosis/metabolism leading to tumorigenesis.
