Overview

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a pentameric, ring-shaped protein found in blood plasma. It is an acute-phase reactant whose levels rise rapidly and significantly in response to inflammation, infection, or tissue injury. CRP functions as part of the innate immune system by binding phosphocholine on dead/dying cells or pathogens, triggering the classical complement pathway, and enhancing opsonization and phagocytosis.
