Overview

C-reactive protein is a pentameric acute phase protein belonging to the short pentraxin family, predominantly synthesized in the liver in response to interleukin-6 during inflammation. It plays a crucial role in host defense by binding to phosphocholine on microbes and damaged cells, activating the complement system, and modulating inflammatory responses. CRP is widely used clinically as a biomarker of infection and systemic inflammation, especially in cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases. Importantly, the mRNA encoding CRP is not used as a biomarker or therapeutic target; clinical and mechanistic relevance resides in the protein form.

Reduction of CRP is generally achieved indirectly, through suppression of upstream inflammation (e.g., inhibition of cytokines like IL-6)
