Overview

CACNA1C antisense RNA 3 (CACNA1C-AS3) is a long non-coding RNA located in the human genome, canonically associated with the CACNA1C locus. CACNA1C-AS3 is 444 nucleotides long and is annotated in multiple RNA databases[1]. It has been implicated in post-transcriptional regulation of genes related to calcium channels. CACNA1C-AS3 shows altered expression or mutational profiles in some cancers, notably stomach adenocarcinoma, where mutations are associated with poor prognosis[1]. Mutational analysis of this lncRNA has revealed effects on its secondary structure and potentially its expression or function[1]. Its biological roles remain under investigation, but it serves as a potential biomarker rather than a direct therapeutic target.

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression in calcium channel-related pathwaysPotential involvement in survival outcomes of stomach adenocarcinoma, possibly via post-transcriptional regulation or modulation of transcript stabilityMay interact with co-mutated lncRNAs (such as HOTAIRM1), suggesting possible regulatory network effectsPossible influence on the secondary structure and functional effects due to mutation-induced changes in minimum free energy
03

Disease associations

Cancer (prognostic biomarker in stomach adenocarcinoma; mutations correlated with poorer survival)Other disease associations are speculative; expression and functional studies are limited
04

Biomarkers

Mutational status of CACNA1C-AS3 (linked with prognostic relevance in stomach adenocarcinoma)Expression levels may be studied as biomarkers in future research, but currently only mutation and expression have been reported as research biomarkers
