CACNA1C intronic transcript 1 (CACNA1C-IT1) is a non-coding RNA transcribed from an intronic region of the CACNA1C gene. Unlike the protein-coding CACNA1C gene, which encodes the pore-forming alpha-1C subunit of the L-type voltage-gated calcium channel involved in cardiac and neuronal physiology, CACNA1C-IT1 does not translate into a protein product. Its precise biological function is unclear, and there is currently no evidence that it is considered a therapeutic target for drug discovery or clinical interventions[5]. Key distinction: CACNA1C-IT1 is a transcript at the CACNA1C locus but is not the same as the protein-coding CACNA1C gene, which encodes a critical voltage-gated calcium channel subunit with well-defined biomedical relevance[1][2][3][4]. All major drug and gene target databases recognize CACNA1C as a protein-coding gene, not CACNA1C-IT1.
