CACNA1G antisense RNA 1 (CACNA1G-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the CACNA1G locus. It acts as a regulatory RNA, modulating the expression of CACNA1G (a calcium channel protein) and other genes involved in cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis. Elevated levels of CACNA1G-AS1 have been observed in diseases such as keloid disorder and several cancers, where it commonly promotes pathological cell behaviors by antagonizing specific microRNAs (notably miR-205 and miR-3160-5p). These features make CACNA1G-AS1 a promising biomarker and therapeutic target for various disorders characterized by aberrant cell growth and survival.
Targeted knockdown of CACNA1G-AS1 (e.g., with siRNAs) leads to decreased proliferation and invasion, and increased apoptosis in disease-relevant cells. CACNA1G-AS1 acts as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), sponging specific microRNAs (miR-205 in keloids, miR-3160-5p in lymphoma), thereby derepressing target mRNAs involved in cell survival, migration, or extracellular matrix production.
