Overview

Cactin antisense RNA 1 (CACTIN-AS1) is a primate-specific long non-coding RNA transcribed antisense to the protein-coding CACTIN gene on chromosome 19p13.3. It does not encode a protein but is implicated in the regulation of gene expression by interacting with chromatin-modifying complexes and potentially influencing transcription and epigenetic landscapes, particularly in cancer. CACTIN-AS1 has been found overexpressed in several cancer types, including colorectal, gastric, and lung cancer, suggesting roles in tumor progression, migration, and invasion. Its biological effects are likely executed via modulation of nearby genes and/or epigenetic regulatory networks, characteristic of many antisense lncRNAs. As of now, CACTIN-AS1 itself is not an established or conventional drug target, but its expression patterns and regulatory activity make it a promising subject for future biomarker development and basic cancer research.
