Calcium-Activated Chloride Channel Protein

Molecular classification
Ion channel, Ligand-gated ion channel, Anoctamin family, TMEM16 family, Chloride channel
01

Overview

Calcium-activated chloride channels (CaCCs) are a group of ligand-gated ion channels that mediate the flow of chloride ions across cell membranes in response to increases in intracellular calcium levels. These channels play essential roles in various physiological processes, including epithelial secretion, sensory transduction, smooth muscle contraction, neuronal excitability, and fluid homeostasis. TMEM16A (ANO1) and TMEM16B (ANO2) are key members of the TMEM16 (anoctamin) family functioning as CaCCs. They are promising therapeutic targets for conditions characterized by abnormal mucus production or impaired motility, ranging from asthma to cancer.
