Calcium-activated potassium channel (KCa channel)

Target
KCa channel
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Potassium channel
01

Overview

Calcium-activated potassium channels (KCa channels) are a family of potassium ion channels that open in response to increases in intracellular calcium concentration. Their activation leads to the efflux of potassium ions, resulting in membrane hyperpolarization and regulation of cellular excitability. These channels play crucial roles in neuronal signaling, muscle contraction, vascular tone, and various physiological processes. There are three main subtypes: Large (BK), Intermediate (IK), and Small (SK), each with distinct tissue distributions and physiological functions.
