Overview

Calcium-activated potassium channel subfamily M alpha member 1 (KCNMA1) is a large conductance, voltage and calcium-activated potassium channel. It forms the pore-forming alpha subunit of BK channels, which regulate smooth muscle tone, neuronal excitability, and cochlear hair cell tuning. The channel is activated by membrane depolarization and increased intracellular calcium, leading to potassium efflux and cellular hyperpolarization. Mutations in KCNMA1 are associated with neurological disorders such as epilepsy and movement disorders.
