The calcium-activated potassium channel subunit alpha SLO-1 (BK, MaxiK, KCa1.1) is a large conductance potassium (K+) channel activated by both intracellular calcium ions (Ca2+) and membrane voltage. It plays a crucial role in coupling membrane excitability to Ca2+ signaling events, impacting muscle contraction, neurotransmitter release, hormone secretion, and auditory function. Functional channels are tetramers of alpha subunits, often associated with auxiliary beta-subunits.
