Overview

Calcium and phosphate ions are the fundamental inorganic components of dental hydroxyapatite, the primary mineral phase of human teeth (Featherstone, 2008). The dental pellicle and plaque surfaces represent the critical biochemical interface where demineralization and remineralization occur, governed by the local pH and ionic saturation levels (Siqueira et al., 2012). In a healthy oral environment, saliva maintains a supersaturated state of these ions to preserve enamel integrity; however, acid production by cariogenic bacteria can lead to ion loss and subsequent tooth decay (Dawes et al., 2015). Therapeutic interventions, most notably fluoride-containing compounds, target this interface to catalyze the redeposition of minerals and enhance the acid resistance of the tooth surface (Buzalaf et al., 2011). By stabilizing these ions or promoting their uptake into the enamel matrix, these treatments effectively prevent the progression of dental caries and erosion (Reynolds, 2008).

Mechanism of action

Therapeutic agents interact with these ions and surfaces to promote the remineralization of enamel by facilitating the precipitation of calcium and phosphate into the tooth structure, often forming fluorapatite which is more resistant to acid dissolution (Featherstone, 2008).
