Calcium-binding tyrosine phosphorylation-regulated protein (CABYR)

Target
CABYR
Molecular classification
Other (sperm-associated structural protein), does not belong to classic druggable classes like receptor, enzyme, transporter, or ion channel

Overview

Calcium-binding tyrosine phosphorylation-regulated protein (CABYR) is a testis-specific protein localized to the principal piece of the sperm flagellum, associated with the fibrous sheath. CABYR is expressed primarily in sperm and involved in sperm capacitation, a maturation process required for fertilization, through its roles in calcium binding (when phosphorylated) and as a structural component. Several transcript variants result in distinct protein isoforms, with some variants binding calcium only when phosphorylated. CABYR has also been found aberrantly expressed in various tumors, classifying it as a cancer/testis antigen and potential biomarker for certain cancers and male infertility, but it is not currently a therapeutic target.
