Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a ubiquitous inorganic mineral that exists in several polymorphic forms, most notably calcite, aragonite, and vaterite (PubChem CID 10112). In biological systems, the calcium carbonate surface serves as a critical interface for biomineralization, where the adsorption of specific proteins and macromolecules regulates the nucleation, growth, and morphology of crystals in structures like shells and bone-like scaffolds (Frontiers in Marine Science, 2021).
