Target intelligence / Profile preview

Calcium channel protein type 1 subunit alpha1C (Cav1.2)

Target
Cav1.2
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Voltage-dependent calcium channel
01

Overview

The calcium channel protein type 1 subunit alpha1C (Cav1.2) is a pore-forming subunit of the voltage-dependent L-type calcium channel, encoded by the CACNA1C gene. It mediates calcium ion influx upon membrane depolarization, playing a crucial role in various physiological processes, including cardiac and smooth muscle contraction, neuronal signaling, and pancreatic function. Mutations and dysregulation of CACNA1C are associated with cardiac arrhythmias, Timothy syndrome, and psychiatric disorders. Dihydropyridines inhibit its activity.
