Overview

Calcium fluoride (CaF2) is an inorganic, crystalline compound that forms as a precipitate in various biological and clinical contexts (PubChem CID 24504). In dentistry, it is the major product formed on the tooth surface following the application of topical fluoride treatments, such as sodium fluoride or acidulated phosphate fluoride; this "CaF2-like" layer acts as a pH-controlled reservoir that releases fluoride ions during acid challenges to promote enamel remineralization and inhibit demineralization (Øgaard, 2001, "CaF2 formation: Cariostatic properties and factors of enhancing the effect"). In emergency medicine, the precipitation of calcium fluoride is the intended mechanism for treating hydrofluoric acid (HF) exposure; calcium gluconate is administered to react with and neutralize the highly toxic fluoride ions, preventing them from causing systemic hypocalcemia and deep tissue necrosis (StatPearls, "Hydrofluoric Acid Burns"). While calcium fluoride is clinically significant in preventive dentistry and toxicology, it is a chemical byproduct or mineral phase rather than a biological macromolecule like a receptor or enzyme, and thus is not classified as a therapeutic target in the traditional sense.
