Calcium ion (Ca²⁺) in dentin is a fundamental inorganic component, existing mainly as part of hydroxyapatite crystals (Ca₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂) that impart hardness, decay resistance, and structural integrity to dentin[1][7]. Calcium ions participate in complex interactions with collagen fibers and non-collagenous proteins during dentinogenesis and ongoing mineralization[5][7]. They are crucial in the chemical and biological processes underlying tissue repair, interaction with restorative materials, mineralized barrier formation, and therapeutic dental applications such as pulp capping and tubule occlusion[2][3][4][6]. While not a "target" in the biomedical drug sense, Ca²⁺ ions are central to many dental interventions, with their controlled release or stabilization being a key feature in biomaterials designed to promote regeneration or reduce sensitivity.
