Overview

Calcium ions present in the dentin matrix are not a discrete molecular target such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or channel, but are instead essential inorganic ions that play a key role in the process of mineralization within dentin tissue. The dentin matrix, a collagen-rich extracellular matrix, binds calcium ions as part of the formation and regulation of mineral phases, principally hydroxyapatite, which imparts hardness and structural integrity to teeth. Several dentin matrix proteins—including dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP-1), phosphophoryn, and osteocalcin—bind calcium ions and mediate their deposition during mineralization processes[1][2][5][6][7]. The interactions of calcium ions with these proteins promote crystal formation and are fundamental to the development and maintenance of mineralized dentin tissue. Calcium ions themselves, however, do not represent a classical therapeutic target, but are central to the biochemical events orchestrated by matrix proteins.
