CACNG8 encodes a type I transmembrane protein that is part of the gamma subunit family of voltage-gated calcium channels. It acts as an auxiliary subunit, primarily regulating the trafficking and gating properties of AMPA-selective glutamate receptors (AMPARs), which are critical for fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. CACNG8 promotes targeting of these receptors to the cell membrane and synapses, thereby influencing synaptic strength and plasticity. Additionally, it can stabilize L-type calcium channels.
