Calcium voltage-gated channel subunit alpha1G (Cav3) is a pore-forming subunit of T-type calcium channels. These channels are responsible for mediating the entry of Ca²⁺ ions into excitable cells in response to membrane depolarization. Cav3 channels open at more negative membrane potentials than other voltage-gated Ca²⁺ channels and quickly inactivate after opening, producing transient currents. They are involved in pacemaking activity, regulation of neuronal firing patterns, calcium signaling, muscle contraction, hormone/neurotransmitter release, gene expression, and cell motility/division/death. Alterations or dysfunctions involving Cav3/T-type channels have been implicated in epilepsy, neuropathic pain syndromes, sleep disorders, and arrhythmias.
