CALHM2 antisense RNA 1 (CALHM2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the DNA strand opposite to the protein-coding gene CALHM2. Antisense RNAs in general function by modulating the expression of their sense partner genes through mechanisms such as interference with transcription, promoting or repressing gene expression via chromatin remodeling, or direct mRNA hybridization. No direct experimental data exists regarding the biological role, disease association, or druggability of CALHM2-AS1. The sense gene, CALHM2, encodes a large pore ion channel involved in ATP release and glial signaling, with emerging relevance in neurobiology. CALHM2-AS1 may regulate CALHM2 expression, but as of the current knowledge, its specific functions and disease connections remain uncharacterized.
