Overview

Calmodulin-binding transcription activator 2 (CAMTA2) is a transcription factor belonging to the calmodulin-binding transcription activator family[2][3]. CAMTA2 contains several conserved domains: a DNA-binding CG-1 domain, a calmodulin-binding domain, nuclear localization signals, ankyrin repeats, and additional regulatory regions[1][3]. It acts as a transcriptional activator and is implicated as a transcriptional coactivator of genes involved in cardiac growth in mammals[3][5]. CAMTA2 is also associated with several disease roles, notably as a putative tumor suppressor and being genetically linked to disorders such as frontotemporal dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and retinitis pigmentosa[3]. Its mechanism involves calcium/calmodulin-mediated signaling which influences gene expression patterns in response to intracellular calcium fluctuations[1]. CAMTA2 is not generally considered a classical “therapeutic target” such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, but is an important transcriptional regulator in physiological and disease contexts[3][5].
