Overview

Caloric intake refers to the total amount of energy consumed from food and beverages over a given period—typically measured in kilocalories per day. It is essential for survival because it supplies the energy required by cells for all bodily functions including metabolism, growth, repair, movement, thermoregulation, and maintaining organ function.[2][5][7] The optimal level varies based on age, sex, activity level, health status, and body composition.[7] Both excessive and insufficient caloric intakes are associated with significant health risks; chronic overconsumption contributes to obesity and related diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease,[8] while underconsumption leads to malnutrition or wasting syndromes.[6] In research settings—especially studies on aging—caloric restriction without malnutrition has been shown to improve metabolic health markers and extend lifespan in model organisms by modulating pathways involved in inflammation resistance,[1] mitochondrial function,[8] neuroprotection,[4] insulin sensitivity,[1], among others.
