Overview

Calpain small subunit 1 pseudogene 1 (CAPNS1P1) is a pseudogene—a non-functional genomic DNA sequence similar to the functional CAPNS1 gene that encodes the calpain small subunit 1 protein. Pseudogenes do not code for a functional protein. Some pseudogenes can transcribe RNA that acts as a decoy for microRNAs targeting the parental gene, but there is no evidence that CAPNS1P1 acts in this regulatory capacity. It is included in gene annotation databases as a non-coding RNA locus, and should not be considered a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter or protein of interest for pharmacological intervention.

Biological functions

May function as a non-coding RNA involved in post-transcriptional regulation of the parental gene, if transcribed (by acting as a microRNA decoy), but direct evidence for CAPNS1P1 is lacking. Not shown to encode a protein or participate in direct biological processes like "Signal transduction" or "Cell proliferation" as protein-coding genes do.

Disease associations

OtherSome pseudogenes (not specifically CAPNS1P1) have been shown to modulate gene expression regulation in cancer and developmental biology, but there is no evidence CAPNS1P1 specifically has such a role.
