Overview

Calponin-1 (CNN1) is a basic smooth muscle actin-binding protein encoded by the CNN1 gene, highly specific for mature, differentiated smooth muscle cells. It regulates and modulates smooth muscle contraction by binding to actin, stabilizing the actin cytoskeleton, and inhibiting actomyosin MgATPase activity. CNN1 is a critical cytoskeletal regulator involved in the negative modulation of smooth muscle cell proliferation, with high utility as a cellular marker in vascular biology and cardiovascular pathology. Its expression levels are dynamically regulated during smooth muscle cell phenotypic switching, making it valuable for research in vascular development, disease states such as atherosclerosis and restenosis, and tissue engineering contexts. Despite being an essential functional and diagnostic marker, calponin-1 is not a conventional therapeutic drug target such as an enzyme, receptor, or transporter
