Overview

BXT-25 is a proprietary hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC) developed by Bioxytran, Inc., utilizing hemoglobin derived from the camel (Camelus dromedarius) [1]. Camel hemoglobin is selected for its unique physiological properties, including a higher oxygen affinity and significantly greater structural and thermal stability compared to human or bovine hemoglobin [2]. The BXT-25 molecule consists of polymerized camel hemoglobin, which is engineered to be approximately 5,000 times smaller than a red blood cell, allowing it to navigate through constricted or partially blocked microvasculature [3]. Its primary therapeutic role is to deliver molecular oxygen to hypoxic tissues, such as the brain penumbra during an ischemic stroke, where red blood cells cannot penetrate [1]. By facilitating oxygen diffusion, BXT-25 helps maintain cellular metabolism and prevent tissue death. However, like other HBOCs, it faces challenges such as nitric oxide scavenging, which can cause vasoconstriction and hypertension, and the potential for oxidative stress mediated by free heme [4].
