cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) is a family of enzymes that catalyze the phosphorylation of serine and threonine residues in target proteins. PKA activation is triggered by the binding of cyclic AMP (cAMP) to its regulatory subunits, leading to the release of active catalytic subunits. PKA plays a critical role in various cellular processes, including signal transduction, gene expression, and metabolism. In the context of astrocytes, PKA regulates glutamate homeostasis by influencing glutamate transporter expression and modulating calcium-dependent glutamate release.
